Welcome to Year 5
Welcome to Year 5! We have travelled such a long way in our learning since Reception and here we are in our final years of primary school. What a fabulous journey we’ve been on. So many different experiences and learning opportunities we have had.
Year 5 is about hard work, dedication and enjoyment. Our lessons allow us to be creative and show our learning in interesting ways. As we have progressed through the school we have developed so many different skills and really understand all the values within our Moral Compass. It is these skills and values which guide us in our learning journey as we continue to grow and develop into caring citizens and members of our wider community.

Reading
"Each time we open a book with children it is an opportunity to walk into a new world together, to explore the inner workings of great literary minds and, as their guide, to point out to the children the sights and sounds that could so easily be missed by the untrained eye.”
In Year 5, we recognise the importance of regular reading to improve vocabulary and develop language skills. When reading, children learn new words as well as seeing how to structure sentences and how to use language effectively, in turn this creates more confident writers. We use a whole class reading approach in Year 5. We teach reading skills using our whole class text. In a typical reading lesson the children all read the same text, discuss ideas, share predictions, define new vocabulary and respond to questions.
Regular reading forms an essential element of learning at home as well as instilling in the children a love of literature and stories. We wholeheartedly recommend that you spend time enjoying and talking about books at home. We ask that your child reads at least four times a week at home and that they record this in their planner.
FESA have recently made a huge investment in our reading material for home reading. We are overjoyed to have such a wide variety of high-quality texts in our classrooms.

Mastery Maths
Throughout the school we follow the Mastery Maths approach to teaching mathematics. Year 5 is all about building upon previous learning in small, manageable steps which allow all children to develop fluency, reasoning and depth of understanding in mathematics. We do daily fluency practise and develop our depth of understanding through problems and reasoning questions. |
Spelling
In Year 5, as the spellings become more complex, we continue to build upon our phonics and spelling knowledge from previous years. We have spelling lessons in school and spellings will be set each week to be practised at home. We recommend learning spellings in sentences and using the spelling activities linked below.

Home learning
Home learning is an important element of the partnership between teachers and parents in Year 5 as it supports learning in school, reinforces learning and ensures your child is ready for their final year at primary school.
Home learning includes: Doodle Maths, Doodle Tables, spelling practise, timetables practise and regular reading. Your child will use their school planner to help them with their organisation.

Curriculum
At Elloughton we have a skills based curriculum which engages and inspires pupils. Each term our learning centres around a ‘Big Question’. Our questions for the 2019-2020 academic year are: Autumn: Vikings: Heroes or Villains? Spring: What Came First the Chicken or the Egg? Summer: Is Water Everywhere? Our termly curriculum overview can be found at the bottom of this page. |
Curriculum Enhancement
In addition to facilitating engaging lessons, we also aim to provide curriculum enhancement through visitors, trips and events. In previous years, we have been on trips to places such as Murton Park and Askham Bryan Wildlife and Conservation Park and we have had visits from scientists and even an Olympian. We have lots of exciting curriculum enhancement plans for the 2019-2020 academic year, please look out for emails and letters for further information. |

Parental Involvement
We value the importance of parent partnerships and promote this throughout the year. Parents will be invited to be involved to share in their children’s learning at special events: look out for key dates on the newsletter and for letters and invitations to join us in school. |

Helping at Home
To support your child at home, we ask that you encourage them to use their school planner to assist them with their organisation, including: home learning, spelling, reading and timestables. Details of all tasks set will be in their planner or on Doodle Maths. Each week please sign their planner to confirm your child has completed their home learning and has read at least four times.

E-Safety
We regularly teach the children the importance of staying safe on the internet. We take part in E-safety day each year and this year was no different. Internet safety day was 6th February and this year the theme was ‘It Starts With Us!’ and provides an opportunity for schools to make the most of the positive opportunities offered online, whilst giving young people the resilience, skills, knowledge and support they need to navigate any online risks they may come across.
