Welcome to Year 5
Welcome to Year 5! We have travelled such a long way in our learning since Reception and here we are in our final years of primary school. What a fabulous journey we’ve been on. So many different experiences and learning opportunities we have had.
Year 5 is about hard work, dedication and enjoyment. Our lessons allow us to be creative and show our learning in interesting ways. As we have progressed through the school we have developed so many different skills and really understand all the values within our Moral Compass. It is these skills and values which guide us in our learning journey as we continue to grow and develop into caring citizens and members of our wider community.

Reading
"Each time we open a book with children it is an opportunity to walk into a new world together, to explore the inner workings of great literary minds and, as their guide, to point out to the children the sights and sounds that could so easily be missed by the untrained eye.”
In Year 5, we recognise the importance of regular reading to improve vocabulary and develop language skills. When reading, children learn new words as well as seeing how to structure sentences and how to use language effectively, in turn this creates more confident writers. We use a whole class reading approach in Year 5. We teach reading skills using our whole class text. In a typical reading lesson the children all read the same text, discuss ideas, share predictions, define new vocabulary and respond to questions.
Regular reading forms an essential element of learning at home as well as instilling in the children a love of literature and stories. We wholeheartedly recommend that you spend time enjoying and talking about books at home. We ask that your child reads at least four times a week at home and that they record this in their planner.
FESA have made a huge investment in our reading material for home reading in recent years. We are overjoyed to have such a wide variety of high-quality texts in our classrooms.

Mastery Maths
Throughout the school we follow the Mastery Maths approach to teaching mathematics. Year 5 is all about building upon previous learning in small, manageable steps which allow all children to develop fluency, reasoning and depth of understanding in mathematics. We do daily fluency practise and develop our depth of understanding through problem solving and reasoning questions. |
Spelling
In Year 5, as the spellings become more complex, we continue to build upon our phonics and spelling knowledge from previous years. Each week our spellings focus on one sound, represented by different letters in the spelling words. .We have spelling lessons daily in school. Spellings are introduced on Monday and are checked on Friday. On weekdays we ask that children practise their spellings on Spelling Shed. We also recommend learning spellings in sentences and using the spelling activities linked below

Curriculum
At Elloughton our curriculum is designed to engage and inspire pupils. In KS2, we follow a two year cycle, to allow for content to be taught progressively, whether the classes are single year groups or mixed year group classes. There is a Cycle A curriculum and a Cycle B curriculum. In 2023-2024 we are following our Cycle A curriculum. Our Cycle A curriculum overview can be found at the bottom of this page. More detailed termly curriculum maps can be found on the Curriculum page. In PSHE, religious education and worldviews (REW), history, geography, science and music our learning centres around enquiry questions. Some examples of these are: History: What are the achievements of the Ancient Maya? Geography: Why is Fair Trade fair? Science: Where do new plants and animals come from? Music: How does music bring us together? |
Curriculum Enhancement
In addition to facilitating engaging lessons, we also aim to provide curriculum enhancement through visitors, educational visits and events. In previous years, we have been on educational visits to places such as Thackray Medical Museum and Askham Bryan Wildlife and Conservation Park and we have had visits from scientists and even an Olympian. For Year 5, this includes the opportunity to go on residential for three days to The Bushcraft Company at Castle Howard; an invaluable opportunity to develop confidence, teamwork and independence - while also being heaps of fun! We have lots of exciting curriculum enhancement plans for the coming academic year, please look out for emails and letters for further information. |

Parental Involvement
We value the importance of parent partnerships and promote this throughout the year. Parents will be invited to be involved to share in their children’s learning at special events. Look out for key dates on the newsletter and for letters and invitations to join us in school. |

E-Safety
We regularly teach the children the importance of staying safe on the internet. We take part in esafety day each year and it provides an opportunity for schools to make the most of the positive opportunities offered online, whilst giving young people the resilience, skills, knowledge and support they need to navigate any online risks they may come across. We also have weekly esafety circle questions to broaden the children's thinking and raise important topics to keep them safe online.
