Welcome to Year 1
'The more that you read, the more that you'll know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.' Dr Seuss
'Tell me and I forget.Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.' Benjamin Franklin
Ethos
Our ethos is to inspire our children to find a love of learning and become independent, confident, curious and responsible members of our community.
Over the past 3 years we have extensively researched and worked hard to develop our provision to a high standard and we are always looking for ways to improve what we have already achieved. We closely follow the principles of provision from Alistair Bryce-Clegg and Anna Ephgrave as we believe their practices are second to none in developing the whole child.

Provision
It is important that our Year 1 curriculum builds on the child-initiated ethos of EYFS. We believe that our pupils should be consulted throughout their learning journey. We value their ideas, skills, talents and curiosity which enable them to thoroughly engage in all areas of provision.
Through provision the children are able to test new skills learnt, consolidating their learning through repetition and collaborative play. Through play we see the children’s communication and social skills bloom which is why we see provision as crucial.

Phonics
We love phonics in Year 1! Every day we encounter a new grapheme which we practise reading and spelling. We love playing ‘quiz quiz trade’ which is a game that gets us moving about whilst practising our reading. We even answer the afternoon register with a real or nonsense word that contains our focus sound. Our phonics is built into every lesson and we have our sound wall to help us to access phonics in all areas of learning. We are very proud to say we have developed our own visuals to support learning at school and home.

Reading
'The more that you read, the more that you'll know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.' Dr Seuss There are reading opportunities in all areas of our provision. We are constantly encouraged to be independent readers as that way the world is our oyster. As well as a huge focus on word reading we take part in regular whole class reading sessions where we look at extracts, whole books and images to become engrossed in conversation, desperate to find out what happens next. On top of this we have our class novel which we listen to daily. |
Writing
We follow a Talk for Writing approach in Year 1. This consists of 3 stages. During the imitate stage we learn a text (which we call our WAGOLL - What A Good One Looks Like). Secondly, we innovate the text where we change the text to give it our own personal touch. Finally we plan and write our own text using our WAGOLL and our personalised texts as inspiration. This process is repetitive to help us to commit learning into long term memory. |

Maths
We follow a mastery maths approach in maths. Mastery maths means that children acquire a deep, long term and adaptable understanding of a concept. Each new concept is taught in small, manageable, progressive steps that continually build upon current knowledge.
As part of the mastery approach each small step is represented in three ways. Initially concepts are represented with concrete apparatus that allow children to visually see any mathematical processes. Then children will be shown a pictorial model but moving onto abstract representations.

Wider Curriculum
Our curriculum is designed to develop the whole child and provide opportunities to harness and develop all talents and interests. Through provision and direct teaching we ensure all aspects of the curriculum are broad and balanced. We make use of a wide range of teaching and learning approaches that make use of our whole school environment and offer experiences and opportunities that develop their ‘Cultural Capital’. This is the knowledge that develops children into rounded individuals with a rich and deep understanding of the world around them.

Parent Partnership
We strongly believe that developing home-school relationships is vital in developing our children. We invite parents and grandparents in regularly to help us celebrate key events throughout the year as well as celebrating our finished topic work. We are always available to answer any queries and support our parents with their child’s journey through Year 1.

Floorbooks
We take a lot of pride in our floorbook work and have developed our own version based on the founder Claire Walden’s approach. We use her process to meet the needs of our big enquiry question each term which covers history, geography and science as the main drivers. As the children work through their topic, our floorbooks become a record of our enquiry, questions, learning and investigations. Through looking and talking about it every session, the children develop ‘sticky’ knowledge which can be recalled more effectively than working in individual topic books. This knowledge lasts all year as they access the floorbooks in provision. The children work in two groups throughout the year which enables smaller group discussions and collaborations in their floorbook. Our children are so enthusiastic when showing their floorbook to visitors and parents they can easily recall learning from many months ago when looking back through past floorbooks.

Computing
We make a lot of use of technology in Year 1. We document our independent work using the app Seesaw. We love scanning QR codes in our environment. We use Chatta to support our writing and we use Chromebooks for digital literacy and coding. We use Bee Bots for coding and the children love solving problems using these. Their favourite device is Osmo on the iPad which helps them develop a wide range of skills from coding, phonics and spelling to shape work in maths.

Art
Over a period of weeks we study the work of a professional artist and use their work as a starting point to consider the seven key concepts in art- line, space, shape, form, texture, value and colour. Where possible we use artist-quality materials because we are artists in the making. We visit Ferens Art Gallery to work with a professional artist for our screen printing skills in the Spring term. |
Music
In Year 1, we believe there should be opportunities for creative development all year round and so music always features in our environment. Our focus instruments are the hand bells and boomwhackers. We love using colour notation to compose our own pieces of music. |

Design Technology (including woodwork)
We are always designing and making in Year 1 and our environment has many opportunities for developing our design and technology skills. We can build, construct, sew, bake, test and refine ideas on a daily basis. In our outside area we have a woodwork bench. |

E-Safety
We regularly teach the children the importance of staying safe on the internet. We take part in E-safety day each year and this year was no different. Internet safety day was 6th February and this year the theme was ‘It Starts With Us!’ and provides an opportunity for schools to make the most of the positive opportunities offered online, whilst giving young people the resilience, skills, knowledge and support they need to navigate any online risks they may come across.
