Art

Art and Design at Elloughton Primary School
Inspired to Learn Through Creativity

At Elloughton Primary School, we believe that art provides children with opportunities to explore ideas, express themselves creatively and develop confidence in their own abilities. Creativity inspires children to explore their thoughts and feelings while developing imagination, curiosity and problem-solving skills.

Through activities such as drawing, painting and experimenting with a range of materials, pupils learn to think imaginatively and develop their own creative responses. Art allows children to make connections between their experiences and their learning, helping them to grow both academically and personally.

Our Art curriculum encourages pupils to experiment, invent and create their own works of art so that they become knowledgeable and skilled artists by the time they leave our school. Through studying artists from different cultures and time periods, pupils develop an appreciation of artistic creativity while building confidence in expressing their own ideas.
Our Art Curriculum
Our Art curriculum is carefully designed so that pupils progressively develop both creative thinking and knowledge of artistic techniques and materials.

Pupils explore a wide range of artistic techniques including drawing, painting, collage and sculpture. As they move through the school, pupils develop their understanding of key artistic concepts including: line, shape, form, space, tone, texture, colour.
These elements of art are revisited throughout the curriculum so that pupils build cumulative knowledge and refine their artistic skills over time.

Sketchbooks play an important role in the Art curriculum. Pupils use sketchbooks to explore ideas, practise techniques and record their artistic development. This allows pupils to experiment, refine their work and develop their creative thinking as artists.

By learning about a variety of artistic styles and approaches, pupils are inspired to develop their own creative responses and express their ideas with increasing confidence.

Working as Artists
In Art lessons, pupils learn to think and work as artists. They explore ideas, experiment with materials and develop their own creative responses.

Pupils begin by researching and discussing the work of different artists in order to gain inspiration and understand a range of styles and techniques. Using their sketchbooks, pupils plan, practise and refine their ideas before creating their final pieces.
Throughout this process pupils reflect on their work, evaluate their choices and consider how their work could be improved. This helps pupils develop confidence, creativity and independence as young artists while understanding that art is a process of exploration, experimentation and reflection.

Through this process, pupils learn to observe carefully, make creative choices and develop their own artistic voice, helping them to think and work like artists.

Revisiting and Developing Skills
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that artistic skills and concepts are revisited and developed over time. As pupils move through the school, they build on their previous learning and develop greater control, confidence and creativity in their work.
Sketchbooks support this process by allowing pupils to practise techniques, explore ideas and reflect on their artistic development.

Supporting All Learners
At Elloughton Primary School, we believe every child should have the opportunity to succeed in Art.

Teachers support pupils through clear modelling of artistic techniques and processes so that pupils understand the skills they are learning, while still encouraging them to develop their own ideas rather than being told exactly what to create.

All learners are supported through effective differentiation and carefully structured guidance. Activities are adapted to meet the needs of different learners through varying levels of support, resources and challenge.

Adaptations may include: additional modelling, simplified instructions, visual examples, step-by-step guidance, alternative ways of recording ideas, targeted adult support.

These strategies ensure that every pupil can access the learning, build confidence and succeed while still expressing their individuality as artists.

Art – Key Vocabulary
In Art, pupils develop subject-specific vocabulary that helps them describe techniques, materials and artistic styles. Teachers model and revisit this language so that pupils can discuss their ideas and evaluate artwork effectively.
Examples of art vocabulary include:
line
tone
texture
colour
pattern
composition
form
perspective

Using this vocabulary helps pupils reflect on their work and communicate their artistic ideas with confidence.

Enrichment
We are incredibly proud of the creative opportunities we provide for our pupils. Children’s artwork is celebrated and displayed in our Amazing Art Gallery, allowing pupils to share and celebrate their achievements with the whole school community.
Each year we host an annual art gallery event where parents are invited into school to view their child’s artwork and take their creations home.

Pupils also have opportunities to showcase their work beyond school. We enter the Young Artist of the Year competition at the local art gallery, where selected pieces of pupils’ work are displayed for the wider community to enjoy.
Alongside this, we provide a home-to-school art bag each week filled with creative resources so pupils can continue exploring art at home.
Each class contributes to an art book that celebrates pupils’ creativity, effort and progress across the school.

In addition to the curriculum, pupils can further develop their creativity through art clubs and cross-curricular learning opportunities.

The Impact of Our Art Curriculum
By the time pupils leave Elloughton Primary School, they are confident in experimenting with a range of artistic techniques and materials. They understand key artistic concepts such as line, tone, colour and texture and can discuss and evaluate their own artwork and the work of others.

Pupils develop creativity, resilience and confidence in expressing their ideas while gaining an appreciation for art and design. Through these experiences, pupils develop a lifelong appreciation of creativity and artistic expression.
