Physical Education at Elloughton Primary School
Inspired to learn through physical activity

At Elloughton Primary School, our Physical Education curriculum enables all children to enjoy and experience a wide range of activities that develop their physical skills, creativity and confidence alongside their health, fitness and wellbeing.

We aim to develop a love of physical activity and sport that encourages children to lead healthy, active lives. Through high-quality Physical Education and a whole-child approach, we nurture confident, resilient pupils who strive to achieve their personal best.
Our Physical Education Curriculum

We are incredibly proud of our fun, inclusive and progressive PE curriculum. Our curriculum has been carefully designed to meet the needs of our pupils while fulfilling the requirements of the National Curriculum. Children experience a wide range of physical activities that help them develop physical competence, teamwork and confidence.

We continually review and refine our curriculum to ensure the best possible experiences for our pupils.
Pupils take part in a broad range of activities including:

  • fundamental movement skills
  • games and team sports
  • gymnastics
  • dance
  • athletics
  • swimming

These experiences allow children to develop coordination, balance, agility, strength and teamwork skills.
Supporting All Learners

At Elloughton Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils can access and enjoy physical education. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to take part in physical activity, develop their skills and build confidence.

Teachers carefully plan lessons so that activities can be adapted to meet the needs of all learners. This may include modifying equipment, adjusting tasks, providing additional support or offering different levels of challenge to ensure that every pupil can participate successfully.

Through PE, pupils are encouraged to work collaboratively, show respect for others and support their teammates. We aim to create a positive and inclusive environment where children feel confident to try new activities and celebrate their achievements.
Where appropriate, staff work with the SENCo to ensure that pupils with additional needs are fully supported to access the PE curriculum and take part in physical activity safely and successfully.

Active 60
At Elloughton Primary School we strongly support the national Active 60 agenda. Children and young people should take part in at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. At least 30 minutes should take place within the school day, with the remaining activity taking place outside of school.

We promote physical activity throughout the school in a variety of ways, including:
  • two hours of PE lessons each week
  • competitions and sporting events
  • SEND competitions
  • participation in sporting leagues
  • OPAL play during breaktimes and lunchtimes
  • a wide range of playground equipment
  • physical activities in the MUGA during lunchtime
  • before and after school sports clubs
  • Forest School activities
  • movement breaks
  • visiting coaches and specialist instructors
  • Bikeability and scooter training
  • residential visits that include outdoor activities

These opportunities help children develop positive attitudes towards physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

Participation and Competition
Pupils have opportunities to participate in competitive sport through school competitions, leagues and festivals organised through the East Riding School Sports Partnership.

We are proud to have achieved the School Games Gold Mark, recognising our commitment to developing sport and competition within our school and the wider community.

Swimming
Pupils in Years 3 and 4 attend swimming lessons at Haltemprice Leisure Centre. During these lessons, children learn to:

  • swim 10 metres using front crawl
  • swim 10 metres using backstroke
  • swim 5 metres using breaststroke
  • swim 25 metres without stopping, touching the sides or using flotation aids

Pupils also develop important water safety and self-rescue skills including:

  • floating on their back and returning safely to the side
  • treading water while signalling for help
  • understanding how to respond safely in water-based emergencies

Children who do not meet the National Curriculum swimming standard have further opportunities to develop these skills.

Sports Partnerships

We work with a range of external sports organisations and coaches to enrich our Physical Education curriculum and provide pupils with opportunities to experience a wide variety of sports. These partnerships help broaden pupils’ experiences and create links with local sports clubs.

The Impact of Our Physical Education Curriculum
By the time pupils leave Elloughton Primary School, they have developed the physical skills, confidence and knowledge needed to participate in a wide range of physical activities. Pupils understand the importance of physical activity for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and develop positive attitudes towards sport, teamwork and personal achievement.

Key Vocabulary
In Physical Education, pupils develop and use subject-specific vocabulary to describe movement, skills and strategies. Examples of key vocabulary include:
balance
coordination
agility
control
teamwork
strategy
fitness
endurance

Developing secure vocabulary helps pupils understand how to improve their performance and communicate effectively during physical activity.
