Sustainability

                    Sustainability at Elloughton Primary School
Working together to care for our world and build a sustainable future

At Elloughton Primary School, we are committed to helping our children understand the importance of caring for the environment and the world around them. We believe that developing positive habits from a young age empowers children to make responsible choices that will have a lasting impact on their future and the future of our planet.

Through a range of practical experiences and whole-school initiatives, our pupils learn how small actions can make a big difference. We actively encourage children to take responsibility, work collaboratively and become thoughtful, environmentally aware citizens.

We are proud to work closely with our school community, including FESA, to promote sustainability and provide meaningful opportunities for our children to contribute to a greener future.

Eco-Deli (FESA Initiative)
Our Eco-Deli, run in partnership with FESA, is a fantastic example of sustainability in action within our school community.

The Eco-Deli is supported by
FareShare, a national organisation that redistributes surplus food from supermarkets and suppliers that would otherwise go to waste. This allows us to reduce food waste while supporting families within our community.

Each week, surplus food is made available through the Eco-Deli, helping to prevent perfectly good food from going to landfill. This initiative not only supports sustainability but also promotes a strong sense of community and shared responsibility.

Through experiences like this, our children begin to understand the importance of reducing waste, valuing resources and supporting others. The Eco-Deli is a meaningful way of bringing our school values to life while making a positive environmental and social impact.

SchoolCycled:
Educate, Recycle, Reward

Elloughton Primary School, we are proud to take part in the mygroupltd.com/schoolcycled/ initiative, which helps educate children about recycling, sustainability and caring for our environment.

Through this programme, our pupils learn about the importance of protecting fragile ecosystems while taking part in practical recycling activities.

How it works

Educate Children access engaging resources that help them understand environmental issues and sustainability.

Recycle Pupils, families and staff collect plastic bottle tops at home and school, helping to reduce waste that would otherwise go to landfill.
Reward For every kilogram of bottle tops collected, the school earns ‘Earth Tokens’, which can be exchanged for items made from recycled materials, such as playground equipment and furniture.

Reducing Waste and Recycling
At Elloughton Primary School, we are committed to reducing waste and encouraging sustainable habits across the school community.

Food Waste in Classrooms
Each key stage has dedicated food waste recycling bins, allowing pupils to dispose of leftover snack items responsibly. This waste is then transferred to our brown recycling bins and collected by the local council. Through this process, pupils develop an understanding of how small, everyday actions can have a positive impact on the environment.

Reuse and Recycling within Our School Community
We actively encourage families to reuse and recycle items wherever possible. School uniform can be donated back to school and made available to other families, helping to reduce waste and support our community.

Throughout the year, we also provide opportunities for families to swap and reuse items such as Halloween costumes, Christmas jumpers, wellies, waterproofs and coats.

These initiatives help to reduce unnecessary waste while ensuring items are reused and shared within our school community. These approaches help our pupils to understand the importance of sustainability and the role they can play in protecting the world around them.

Recycling in School
At Elloughton Primary School, we are committed to reducing waste wherever possible and encouraging our children to take responsibility for the environment through simple, everyday actions.

As part of this, we take part in a recycling initiative with Ufill, where used glue sticks are collected and recycled rather than being sent to landfill.

This initiative helps our pupils to understand that even small actions can have an impact on the environment and that everyone can play a part in making more sustainable choices.

Looking Ahead
We are proud of the steps we are taking as a school community and will continue to look for new ways to reduce waste, promote sustainability and care for our environment.
