RSHE

RSHE at Elloughton Primary School
Inspired to learn through personal development

At Elloughton Primary School, Personal, Health, Social and Economic (PSHE) education supports pupils in developing the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to live healthy, safe and successful lives.

Through RSHE, pupils learn how to manage their emotions, build positive relationships and understand their role within the wider community. The subject supports pupils in becoming confident, responsible and respectful individuals.

PSHE also supports the development of our school values and Moral Compass, helping pupils demonstrate kindness, respect, integrity, empathy and resilience in their daily lives.

Our RHSE Curriculum
PSHE is taught through the Jigsaw programme, which provides a structured and progressive curriculum from Early Years through to Year 6.

The programme supports pupils’ personal development through six themed units, known as “Puzzles”, which are taught across the school each year:

Being Me in My World
Celebrating Difference
Dreams and Goals
Healthy Me
Relationships
Changing Me

Each unit builds pupils’ knowledge and skills progressively as they move through the school, ensuring that learning is age appropriate and supports children’s social and emotional development.

Relationships and Health Education
Relationships and Health Education is a statutory part of the primary curriculum and is taught through our PSHE programme.
Through these lessons pupils learn about:

positive friendships
respect and kindness
family relationships
mental well being
personal safety
online safety
healthy lifestyles

Teaching is carefully planned so that content is appropriate for pupils’ age and stage of development. At Elloughton Primary we deliver both the statutory and wider personal development elements through the Jigsaw programme.

Relationships and Health Education are statutory parts of the primary curriculum. Parents have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from the non-statutory elements of sex education. Further information can be found in the school’s Relationships and Sex Education policy.

Supporting Emotional Wellbeing
Supporting pupils’ emotional wellbeing and self-regulation is an important part of our PHSE provision. As a school we use approaches informed by Jen Foster, an educator specialising in emotional wellbeing and self-regulation strategies, to help pupils understand and manage their emotions.

Children are supported to recognise their feelings, develop self-regulation skills and build resilience so they are able to respond positively to challenges both in school and beyond.
Supporting Learners
At Elloughton Primary School, we ensure that all pupils can access and engage with the PSHE curriculum. Lessons are delivered in a safe and supportive environment where pupils feel comfortable sharing ideas and asking questions.

Teachers use a range of strategies, including discussion, group work and reflection, to support different learning styles.

Activities may be adapted to support pupils with additional needs, ensuring that every child can develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to support their wellbeing and personal development.

British Values and Protected Characteristics
British values and protected characteristics are taught and explored through our PSHE curriculum and wider school experiences. These themes are regularly discussed through Picture News, which encourages pupils to explore current events and reflect on important issues.

Through these discussions, pupils develop an understanding of the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Pupils also learn about equality and protected characteristics, helping them develop respect for diversity and an understanding of fairness and inclusion within modern British society.

Whole-School Approach
RSHE is supported through a whole-school approach where pupils develop positive attitudes and behaviours across all aspects of school life.

Assemblies, class discussions, Picture News and wider school experiences reinforce key themes from RHSE learning and encourage pupils to apply these values in their everyday behaviour.

The Impact of Our RSHE Curriculum
By the time pupils leave Elloughton Primary School, they have developed the confidence and skills needed to manage relationships, understand their wellbeing and contribute positively to society.

Pupils understand how to keep themselves safe, show respect for others and make thoughtful decisions in a range of situations.

Key Vocabulary
Examples of key vocabulary include:

wellbeing
respect
responsibility
relationships
community
empathy
safety
choices

Developing this vocabulary helps pupils understand and discuss important aspects of personal development and wellbeing.
