Modern Foreign Languages (French) at Elloughton Primary School
Inspired to learn through languages
At Elloughton Primary School, learning a modern foreign language helps pupils develop curiosity about the wider world and an appreciation of different cultures.
Through the study of French, pupils develop communication skills, confidence and an understanding of how languages work.
Learning a language supports pupils in developing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills while also encouraging them to explore similarities and differences between languages and cultures.

Promoting French Across the School
At Elloughton Primary School we aim to raise the profile of French across the whole school.
Assemblies sometimes include songs to help increase pupils’ familiarity with the language, and music is played at the beginning of the day as children enter the school grounds.
Pupils are encouraged to practise their speaking and listening skills regularly and to use the target language as part of everyday school life. Each week a Word of the Week is promoted across the school to support this.
Children are encouraged to use simple French phrases in daily routines, such as answering the register and using greetings.
French vocabulary is also displayed on signs around the school and in classrooms to support pupils in developing confidence with the language.
Our Languages Curriculum
French is taught in Key Stage 2 and provides pupils with the opportunity to develop their language skills progressively over time. Pupils learn to:
listen attentively to spoken language
speak with increasing confidence and accuracy
read and understand familiar words and phrases
write simple sentences and short texts
Lessons introduce pupils to everyday vocabulary and conversational language while helping them understand basic grammar and sentence structure.
Developing Communication Skills
Pupils develop their speaking and listening skills through a range of engaging activities including songs, games, role play and conversation. These activities help pupils practise pronunciation and build confidence when communicating in another language.
Understanding Language and Culture
Learning French also helps pupils develop an understanding of French culture and traditions. Pupils explore aspects of everyday life in French-speaking countries, helping them develop respect and curiosity about other cultures.
Through language learning, pupils also recognise connections between French and English vocabulary, supporting their wider language development.
Supporting All Learners
At Elloughton Primary School, language lessons are designed to be inclusive and engaging for all pupils.
Teachers support pupils through modelling, repetition and practical activities so that all learners can develop confidence in speaking and understanding a new language.
