Geography at Elloughton Primary School
Inspired to learn about our world
At Elloughton Primary School, we believe that geography helps children to understand the world around them and their place within it.
Our Geography curriculum inspires curiosity and fascination about the Earth, its people and environments. Through geography, pupils develop a sense of responsibility for the world and an appreciation of the diversity of places, cultures and landscapes.
Our curriculum encourages pupils to ask questions about the world, explore different environments and understand how physical and human processes shape the planet. Through their learning, pupils also develop the values within our moral compass by showing respect for the environment and empathy for communities around the world.

Our Geography Curriculum
Our Geography curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ knowledge of places, people, environments and the processes that shape our world. Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils build their understanding progressively as they move through the school. Pupils develop knowledge and understanding of: Physical geography, including features such as rivers, mountains, climate and natural environments.
Human geography, including settlements, land use, trade and the ways in which people interact with their environments.
Locational knowledge, helping pupils understand where places are in the world and how they are connected. Through these areas, pupils develop a deeper understanding of the relationships between people, places and the environment.
Working as Geographers
In Geography lessons, pupils learn to think and work as geographers. They are encouraged to:
ask geographical questions about the world around them
use maps, atlases, globes and digital mapping tools to locate and investigate places
develop map skills such as using compass directions, symbols and grid references
collect and analyse geographical data
observe and record features in the local environment
compare different places and environments
use geographical vocabulary to describe and explain their ideas
Through this process, pupils develop enquiry skills and learn how geographers investigate the world.
Fieldwork and Local Geography
Fieldwork is an important part of the Geography curriculum. Pupils are given opportunities to explore their local environment and develop practical geographical skills.
Fieldwork activities may include observing local features, collecting data, using maps and conducting geographical investigations.
Revisiting and Developing Knowledge
Geographical knowledge and skills are revisited and developed throughout the curriculum. Pupils gradually build their understanding of places, environments and geographical processes.
As pupils progress through the school, they develop greater confidence in interpreting maps, analysing information and explaining geographical patterns.
Supporting All Learners
At Elloughton Primary School, we believe every child should have the opportunity to succeed in Geography.
Teachers support pupils through modelling, discussion and structured learning activities that help pupils understand new concepts. Visual resources such as maps, atlases and images support pupils in developing their geographical understanding.
Adaptations may include additional support, simplified instructions or alternative ways of recording learning so that all pupils can participate fully.
Key Vocabulary
In Geography, pupils develop and use subject-specific vocabulary to describe and explain the world around them. Teachers explicitly introduce and revisit key geographical terms so that pupils can communicate their ideas clearly and develop a secure understanding of geographical concepts. Examples of geographical vocabulary include:
continent
country
climate
environment
physical features
human features
settlement
population
region
landscape
Vocabulary is introduced, revisited and applied across different units of learning so that pupils can confidently describe places, environments and geographical processes.
The Impact of Our Geography Curriculum
By the time pupils leave Elloughton Primary School, they have developed a strong understanding of the world around them and the relationships between people and environments.
Pupils are able to use maps and geographical vocabulary confidently, ask questions about the world and explain how physical and human processes shape different places. They develop curiosity about the world and a sense of responsibility for the environment and the communities within it.
